Stamford sets a new standard

IUSF Conference 2011

IUSF Conference (2011) at Hua-Hin Campus

The International University Student Federation (IUSF) was founded at Nareasuan University in 2009. The purpose of this federation is to help student leaders from each international university in Thailand, and perhaps in the near future, other surrounding countries to orchestrate activities to help network and create stronger relations among the universities. These activities give students valuable real-world management experience, as well as, an understanding of relations among universities.

Interview with Ajarn Gus Sumner

Gus Sumner

Ajarn Gus Sumner is head of General Education. He has been teaching at Stamford for ten years. His classes always attract and delight our students.

His advice to students:

“Follow your heart.”

  1. Students always list your classes as among their favorites. To what do you attribute this accolade?

I’m lucky I get to teach courses that really interest me, like Music of World Cultures, Philosophy and History. Since I enjoy teaching the subjects so much, maybe some of that enjoyment comes out. We’re adding new courses to the General Ed curriculum, which I can’t wait to teach: Drugs and Society and one on Cosmology, the study of the universe! Also, I remember the professors I enjoyed from university and what impressed me about them. The Dean of the Education Department had so much enthusiasm for the teaching profession that he passed that on to the students. You couldn’t help but like the guy because he was so passionate about education.

Here and back again

by Steven K (Vice President Stamford Media and Entertainment Club)

Here and back again, the first semester of calendar year 2011 started well with both old and fresh students coming together at our prestigious university. I know for some of you, the semester has been a challenge with ups and down. For some it’s,” Oh no I have to wake up and go to the morning class again.” For some it is an unending excitement meeting their friends, but for some, new good looking female students and go to new classes. Before I continue writing about and welcoming our new students and lecturers to this small but unique university of Stamford. I would like to write shortly about Stamford Media and Entertainment Club, The Stamford View which consists of old and new members. Once again we are happy to put ourselves into work of writing stories, conducting interviews and publishing them into our newsletter.

I warmly welcome our new freshmen. As we all know the first semester of the STIU calendar year is the time where most new students come to Stamford.  STIU offers what it is now called “Truly International”. When Malaysia says it is ‘truly Asia’ this university gives you the atmosphere of “Truly International”. Perhaps in order to emphasize how unique STIU really is the management can come up with another slogan like “Amazing Stamford” as to ‘Amazing Thailand’. Well, just think about it.

However, this university offers more than you think, despite the size of the campus. Here you can enjoy the sense of multicultural community. We have students from various origins such as Sweden, Norway, Germany, The United States, France, Nepal, China, Nigeria, Kenya, etc. etc. etc. , and of course Thailand, DUHHHH! Having so many students from different backgrounds give you the opportunity to improve your English, unless you know their native languages or any sign language.

TSV Interview - Two of Our New Teachers

Name: Viktoriya Falileeva
City, Country: Moscow, Russia
Interest/Hobbies: Reading, salsa dancing, travelling, cooking.

  1. Why did you choose Stamford?
I was very impressed with Stamford’s friendly, relaxed atmosphere when I came here for the interview. Besides, it happens to be very close to my apartment, which is good for me.

  2. What is your impression of the university and the students?
Unlike some other university, Stamford (Its Bangkok campus) is not very big, which reminds me of the university I graduated from back home. I like the fact that most students and instructors know one another. It feels very cozy and accommodating. It’s easy to notice that they enjoy studying here and appreciate the low-pressure atmosphere. My only wish would be to hear more students speak in English outside of the classroom.

  3. What do you like best about Thailand?
Thai people. I’ve always appreciated the way they treat foreigners, their willingness to help, their nonaggressive nature and their positive attitude.

  4. What do you like least about Thailand?
Sometimes I wish it weren’t quite so hot in Thailand.
